Jacky Cheng winner of John Stringer Prize 2022

Congratulations to Jacky Cheng on being recently awarded the John Stringer Prize 2022. Cheng is also part of Spaced’s current program, Rural Utopias.

We are thrilled to share that Jacky Cheng is the winner of the John Stringer Prize 2022, which she was awarded for her intricate installation …that awaits at the end of life.

Prize finalists Amanda Bell, Bruno Booth, Guy Louden, Katie West and Holly Yoshida, were also selected by the panel of three leading arts professionals Helen Carroll, Manager, Wesfarmers Arts; Jane Chambers, Revealed curator, Fremantle Art Centre and Sarah Wall, curator, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA).

The six artists were invited to produce a new artwork in any medium for inclusion in the exhibition. In the months leading up to the Prize, members of The Collectors Club visited each of the nominated artists’ studios and intimately came to know their work. Club members then voted at the exhibition by way of secret ballot to decide on the Prize recipient.

This year’s John Stringer Prize is showing Janet Dreamer’s work ‘Walkabout’. Janet sadly had passed after being chosen to be one of the six John Stringer Prize finalists. Janet painted daily at Yarliyil Arts, Halls Creek and for many years was a leading artist and the matriarch of the Halls Creek arts community.

Location: John Curtin Gallery.

Dates: 7 October to 4 December 2022.
