Know Thy Neighbour #3: The Subiaco Object Exchange

The Subiaco Object Exchange is an on-site public program produced by Spaced and artist Jessee Lee Johns, founder of the ephemeral nation, The Commonwealth of New Bayswater.

The object exchange is an integral part of the New Bayswater economy, a vital way to meet consumer demand in a resource challenged nation. It also builds social bonds between the tiny nations’ citizens, and is a much-loved feature in the cultural landscape. Bringing the object exchange to the world is a core part of New Bayswater’s foreign aid program.

With the help of Subiaco Voices of youth, the Commonwealth of New Bayswater Department of Public Works will develop and build the Subiaco Object Exchange. It functions as a place for the residents of Subiaco to offer and replace objects of sentiment and/or utility, or to simply come and have a look at items that once belonged to their neighbours.

The Subiaco Object Exchange is offered as a complementary program for the exhibition Know Thy Neighbour 3, which explores how communities engage with their local cultural and urban context. Know Thy Neighbour 3 is exhibiting at the Cullity Gallery until 25 March 2023, and you can read more about it here.

The Subiaco Object Exchange opens from the 24th to 26th of March, situated in front of the Subiaco Museum.

The Subiaco Object Exchange is a joint venture between The Commonwealth of New Bayswater Department of Public Works, Subiaco Voices of Youth, the City of Subiaco and Spaced.
