After a two-year hiatus, Sarah Rodigari returns to the community of Ravensthorpe for her Rural Utopias project as part of Spaced 4. She reflects here.

This weekend Spaced artist Jo Darbyshire opens with her exhibition Rural Utopia/Radical Disappearance at the Lake Grace Regional Artspace. This forms a component of Spaced’s core programming, Rural Utopias.

Join fellow residents of Victoria Park and surrounds for a gentle, creative workshop on the themes of home, place and identity led by artist Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson and creative arts therapist Cara Phillips. This workshop forms part of Eshraghian-Haakansson’s residency in the Know Thy Neighbour #3 program.

With Fremantle Art Centre recently sharing their Groundwork artists, we are excited to see two names among the lineup from our own programming. Yabini Kickett and Bennett Miller have been part of our Know Thy Neighbour #3 and Rural Utopias residencies, respectively, and will continue to deliver work on these projects across the year.

We are happy to share the news that Spaced artist Alana Hunt has been granted an inaugural arts fellowship to join the 2022 Asialink Leaders program.

As part of UWA’s Empowering Communities Through Design masters unit coordinated by Lara Camilla Pinho, speakers from Know Thy Neighbour #3 will be discussing their work and reflecting on community engagement. ⠀⠀

Panellists will include Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson and Amy Perejuan-Capone, with Mayma Awaida (Curator, Know Thy Neighbour #3) and Soula Veyradier (Director Programs, Spaced) as moderators.

In our programs we work with community partners to foster new and more productive modes of interaction between contemporary artists and communities and to promote a dialogue between regional, metropolitan, and international perspectives.

For the Rural Utopias residency, we have been generously supported by Salvatore (Sam) and Nigel, Margaret River locals and artisans.

Through Spaced’s Rural Utopias program, we have been working with Emerging Producer Francesco Geronazzo during Jacky Cheng’s residency in Margaret River.

Francesco Geronazzo lives and works in Margaret River, Western Australia and Castel del Rio in Italy, and teaches printmaking techniques through his studio Margaret River Printmaking

Rural Utopias artists Alana Hunt and Jacky Cheng have been included as finalists in the seventy-eight artists from across Australia shortlisted for the 2022 National Works on Paper.

Over the next weeks, we’ll be introducing our Know Thy Neighbour #3 artists, along with their community partners.
